Say it a war of ideologies, be it right or left or center. The question is whether Health care should be available all the citizens of a country? In my view, there are 4 fundamental areas any government should create security for its citizens. They are Education, Infrastructure (Roads/transport, clean environment, energy), Peace/military (security and maintain sovereignity) and Public Health. Although capitalist thought says, each of these areas will give better services to its consumers by privitazing - isn't this tantamount to all the "citizens" are considered "consumers"? There-in lies, the balancing act....for certain aspects and conditions, there needs to be social net and governance, for certain, there should not be. For example, how offensive would it appear, if military of a country is privitized? How does the notion "let us hire some mercenaries/pirates when the demand comes (through war) on contract basis, because it saves money and increases performance" sound? Do we really think, even patriotism can be "consumerised"?
Health and wealth have a direct bearing on the happiness of the citizens. Heath care is an unalienable right of the citizens and is fundamental to a successful state. Healthcare is an essential service, every human being needs. Such a care should be available to a wide populance without descrimination. I have noticed an attitude in some doctors in America, their "practice" has become a commercial venture, with only one aim - make profit. Treating patients have become a secondary goal. In India (where I was brought up) medicine used to be considered a noble and self-less profession because of its intrinsic service to humanity (the wealth it creates for the practioner is incidental). Even in the west, contributions are celebrated with the likes of Jonas Salk, Albert Schweitzer, Ronald Ross and numerous others. In general, moral and humane touch to medicine has slowly been eroded with the advent of commercial angle to it....in the name of efficiency and performance. Doctors want to protect the lawsuits on frivolous grounds, insurance companies wants to manage "risk". Who will be the loser in such a set up? If everyone has rights and pursues liberty, can they remain without being selfish?
Since, the world economy is dominated with capitalistic thought, which is leading us on a path of privitizing everything. However, it is only fair that the Healthcare in the US is regulated and reformed, so that the parity is established. Healthcare reform, should not be be considered a redistribution of wealth (although, it is balancing of power); rather it should be considered as taming the greed, which has gone unchecked for decades!!

Surya,
Very well put. I am in total agreement with you that health care should not be treated as just another business and should be available to all. BTW, are you now in USA or India?
